Hells Hills was the scene of my first 50K race back in 2011. Despite a lingering bout of Plantar Fasciitis and a bum ankle (or cuboid syndrome), I had hopes of bettering my previous course time of 5:42. Late into the 1st 25K loop, it became apparent that my foot/ankle would not hold up for the entire race at the pace that I wanted. I hobbled in with a time of 2:47 and turned in my timing chip. Rather than throw myself a solo pity party, I decided to “nut up” and run with my coaching client, Faith, for loop 2 of her 3 loop 50 Mile race. I’m not certain that she was entirely happy to see me when she finished her 1st loop, but I know she eventually appreciated the company and the subtle push. We ran a solid 2nd loop together that left her plenty of wiggle room to complete the 3rd loop with her husband Jay well-under the time cut-off. Hells Hills would be her 3rd ultra-marathon and 2nd 50 Mile finish. So proud and honored to play a small role in her success.
