My first taste of the Franklin Mountains in El Paso was last November at the Franklin Mountains 50K. It was one of the most technical trails that I've ever experienced. When my friend, Michelle Blackard, expressed interest in teaming up for the Lonestar 100K relay in February on almost the exact same course, I said yes immediately. She got the 1st leg of the relay and cruised in about 6 minutes ahead of 4th place. The 2nd leg of the 4th place team was a speedy friend from Fort Worth, so I ran like a bat out of hell to make sure I stayed out of sight. I never did see anyone chasing me and I had comfortably made our way into 2nd place by halfway thru my leg. It was a great race for us and I was very happy to see that I was able to run faster than I did in November. No easy feat as half of my leg was in the dark. Awesome weekend!
