Last June, I was gifted the opportunity to crew and pace a friend and #teamninja athlete, Matt Florence, for the Western States 100 Endurance Run. If you aren't familiar with the ultra trail running scene, you need to know that the WS100 is similar to the Boston Marathon for road runners. If you aren't familiar with the road running scene either, then you should just know that both races are big deals with stringent rules to qualify and incredibly difficult to get in. The race was actually just one week after I would be running Bighorn 100, so there was no guarantee that I would be able to actually be in any condition to pace. But there was also no way I was passing up the chance to see the course and experience the race atmosphere in person. Unfortunately, Matt would experience GI issues in one of the hottest days in WS100 history. His race day ended at mile 55.7 Michigan Bluff.
